32) ¿DE DÓNDE PROCEDE EL NOMBRE DE QUINIELA? 32) FROM WHERE DOES QUINIELA (THE FOOTBALL BETTING POOLS) NAME PROCEED?

32) From where does Quiniela (the football betting pools) name proceed?

Etymologically: Quiniela (Football betting pools) proceeds from the Latin  word "quintus" (five) and according to some of the scholars in this field: it derives from an ancient Roman game in which five players participated. And five were the games that formed the first sealed betting tickets in the Callealtera bar in Santander. (To be continued…)

31) Y LA GRAN DIFUSIÓN DE LAS QUINIELAS ¿SE DEBE A LA CUANTÍA DE LOS PREMIOS? / 31) ABOUT THE GREAT DIFFUSION OF THE FOOTBALL BETTING POOLS, IS IT DUE TO THE VALUE OF THE PRIZE?

31) About the great diffusion of the football betting pools, is it due to the value of the prize?

The success of the game spread its popularity thanks to travellers and sailors who returned home with sealed betting tickets. The earnings were important. At first, 95% of revenues were for prizes, the remaining five percent was for the government. In 1931 the figure of 85% was for prizes and the rest for the government. Subsequently other agencies were also benefited from the division and allocation of earnings such us the City Hall or the Charity.

The Spanish Civil War eliminated this private organization of a game which had amazed people in different parts of the world. As the fratricidal strife ended, the management of the football betting pools was granted to the religious order of San Juan de Dios, which was managed from its headquarters in Vigo, with the name of Bolsa de Fútbol, from December 3, 1939.

The percentages of allocations were modified significantly: 50% for prizes, 5% administration and the remaining 45% to the religious order. This led to many cafeterias and bars to commercialize their individual football betting pools with the "Callealtera" system. All business built on the ideas of Manuel disappeared with the war and the transfer of power to the Order of San Juan de Dios  which took place in the 1939-40 league. The scheme devised by the son of Sota González remained.

Certain financial scandals caused a lack of trust in the system used by the Order in Vigo in 1944 and management was transferred to the headquarters of the religious order in the Hospital of Santa Clotilde Santander. Two years later, on September 22, 1946, the State created the patronage of Mutual Sports Betting Charities, in 1948 with the introduction of the 1X2 and its fourteen games, the allocation of the betting ticket prizes grew up to be 55% .

Neither Gonzalez Lavin Sota´s children nor any of the five daughters of Manuel, received any money for the unrecognized patent of the invention. Manuel Gonzalez Lavin died in a concentration camp in France.

The first betting ticket accepted as such by the State is dated September 22, 1946 with the cost of two pesetas. 38,530 tickets were sealed with a subsequent 62 winning tickets and a top prize of 9,603 pesetas in 1946. That ticket directly conformed to the outcome of 7 games..

The jackpot in the football betting pools to date corresponds to the 2005-06 season, in which on the sixth day, a winner from Reus (Tarragona) won more than nine million Euros. And the biggest revenues of the football betting tickets pools was in the 95-96 season with 21,723.462.29 Euros and the largest amount accumulated was nearly seven millions Euros. 30) ¿CUÁNDO SE IMPLANTA EL 1X2 QUE CONOCEMOS ACTUALMENTE?/ WHEN WAS THE 1X2 AS WE KNOW IT TODAY INTRODUCED?

30) When was the 1X2 as we know it today introduced?

The 1X2 is not definitely introduced with its 14 games until 1948.

The first betting ticket that remains sealed today is from the 22 of November, 1931.

The Gonzalez Lavin raised the foundations of what later became known as the 1X2 with printed rules that regulated the distribution of prizes and possible setbacks such as the suspension of matches.

The organization chart was led by a monitoring committee that used to seal the proofs of betting tickets to carry out the scrutiny before the public presence and to admit claims.

A comparison of that first regulation (published in 1931) and approved by the State (in 1949), owner of the business after the civil war, demonstrates the ability and intelligence of the first designers whose names deserve to be mentioned. The commission was composed by Manuel Cos, Francisco Peral, Manuel Escudero and lastly Antonio Balaguer who was in those days a player of Racing of Santander.

People used to arrive, to fill out a sheet and to deposit it in a mailbox in the same bar. Later the committee members were responsible for classifying the deposited betting tickets.

The first betting tickets consisted in five games since there were only ten teams playing  the championship in 1930. Let’s remember their names: Racing, Barcelona, Arenas, Athletic, Real Union Irun, Europe, Real Sociedad, Alava, Real Madrid and Deportivo Español. (To be continued…)
