THEY ARE TWO TEAMS FROM MADRID WITH MORE THAN A CENTURY OF HISTORY, WITH PARALLEL LIVES YET THEY ARE SO DIFFERENT. HOW DID THE PASSING OF A CENTURY INFLUENCE THE FOOTBALL CLUBS?

34) Lets talk about a classic derby: Atletico de Madrid-Real Madrid. They are two teams from Madrid with more than a century of history, with parallel lives yet they are so different. How did the passing of a century influence the football clubs?

Talking to former players in the community of football of the RFEF in Las Rozas during the Second Advanced Course of Sports Directors concerning Real Madrid and after listening carefully to professionals of the ball, they asked for my opinion regarding Real Madrid. From the humble perspective of observing reality I told them: “Real Madrid has not yet adequately elaborated upon the title of being named the best club of the twentieth century.” It means that becoming the best club carries an implicit job, but it is harder to remain known as the best than it is to have achieved the well-known title.  My interlocutors agreed and among them was someone who was named the first Sporting Director of the RFEF, Fernando Hierro.

If I were asked: Is it possible to have a strong economic growth without sporting growth? I would tell you that to all institutions (Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid or any other club) what matters most is efficiency rather than history. It is the group (the fittings room, the youth, and the players of the club) who are interested in history. Examples of groups: "La Quinta del Buitre of Real Madrid", "the Barcelona Dream Team," "The River Plate Machine", "Los cinco magnificos of Zaragoza", "La delantera de seda of Atletico Madrid" ....

With respect to Atletico Madrid, to say we are always born second in rank, it is to say, everyone happens to be born second to something. The same things happen in every club, the difference among them is how each one appropriates that which has been already inherited.

To the rojiblanco club the passing of a century had a painful result which later descended to the second division where it greeted the new millennium in ¨hell¨. In regards to big clubs, Atletico which is the 3rd largest in Spain (considering tittles, prestige and social mass), must know how to lose. And as a result of failing to win a European final at the last minute and then to lose the subsequent game following a tie, the preceding club president’s: said "We are El Pupas” quote which still resonates in the mind of fans today.

Being that is not easy to learn how to lose; it is more difficult to learn how to win.

One thing is to be a great club and another is to be a great team. If there is a group, there is team, but if there is not a group, even though it pretends to attain triumphs, it simply will not be since the football team is part of the club, but it is not the club, it is not the institution.

A team can represent the club, but not be representative of it.

The difficulties of the great teams are not in the past they are in the future. The achievements and the trophy cases do not win the matches because there is not a strong discourse, there is weak speech. The triumph is achieved by way of hard work and the titles from perpetual work. (To be continued…)

33) ¿CÓMO PUEDE PENSARSE O QUE RELACIÓN HAY ENTRE LA SALUD Y EL DEPORTE?/ HOW COULD IT BE THOUGHT OF OR WHAT RELATION THERE IS BETWEEN HEALTH AND SPORT?

33) How could it be thought of or what relation there is between health and sport?

In sport as in any sporting activity, there is always an element at play: the athlete.

Humans are unique in each and every different facet in which we participate: family, work, studies, and, likewise in sports as well. This is more noticeable, especially in professional athletes due to the requirement of high competition, which neither begins nor ends on the field.

It is very important for the athletes to take continuous care of their bodies in order to obtain good results. But training the body is not the only thing. All professional sports, and football is a clear example, know the valuable role that a state of mind plays in obtaining the best result.

And, it may be very severe, but the results in the highest competition are the turning point which determines the future of the athlete.

Specialists in psychoanalysis know perfectly about the complexity of the different feelings, emotions and the relationship of these in the group, where most team sports are developed, such as football (football)...

Different factors can be considered: from prevention and treatment of injuries or how to overcome adversities even in the following moments succeeding great triumphs, since we have seen prestigious sporting clubs precipitously plummet or great athletes crumble after a title or making a historical mark, a record, or a club change that "should" have brought about an economic benefit or sporting improvement.

Important in day to day life and the "invisible" training of an athlete are the ¨changing situations¨ such as: a wedding,  international participation in football,  award nomination, the birth of a child, the death of a relative, a change of club or country, descents or ascents of category, retirement ... that can cause difficulties. These are changing situations to be tended to with precision since the small modifications are the most difficult to obtain and generally represent further change for the athlete.
