29) HABLEMOS DE LAS QUINIELAS, ¿CUÁNDO COMENZARON?/ 29) LET'S TALK ABOUT THE FOOTBALL POOLS, WHEN DID THEY START?

29) Let's talk about the football pools, when did they start?

September, 22nd 1946  is officially set as the date where the Agency Lotteries and State Bets celebrates its birthday however the football pools were born in Santander by 1928-1929 and there is public constancy of this, for the first time,  November, 22nd 1931.

Research conducted by Juan José Morón (president of the Association of Professional Sports Betting) show that Manuel Gonzalez Lavin was the inventor and a bar called "The Callealtera" (Children of G. Sota) located at 22 High Street in Santander which was run by three brothers was the place where people started playing and to seal the first football pools.

There is evidence of a lottery ticket sealed by Hacienda in 1931 with the application of a 10% tax. Before that date the regulation was written by hand and it was not until 1931 that it was printed and it had a minimum mandatory legalization which was modified over the years.

There are documents from the origins of this popular game with dates, bets, regulations, letters of bettors and names of the members of the supervisory committee and scrutiny.

It was necessary, so it is written, that three sources converge for establishing as football pools and developing into one of the most popular games in Spain. These three distinct and distant sources ensured to have participated in "foot-ball draws" between 1929 and 1941, showing paid and rewarded tickets.

The first one was the buyers Gamecocks from Mexico who showed bets which corresponded to Spanish league season 1931-32. The second one was sailors from Valencia who carried chamomile from Sanlúcar to England with scale in Santander, where they earned money for their successes in the football pools (rates for property and the City were already discounted) and the third source is the religious of the Hospitable Order San Juan de Dios that provided betting data for the years 1940-1941.

These data are held by one of the five daughters that Manuel Gonzalez had, who created in 1929 with the premiere of the league, a game that transcended to its city to spread to the rest of Spain and even America.

Cockfights were held In the courtyard of "Los Sota" by the people there and the cocks were trained by them, being the cockfights what promoted to continue betting, but at that time with ten football teams which figured in the Spanish league, so with the first tickets they counted only with five games and they were not exactly played the 1X2, but by a complex set of points by the number of goals, exact match results and goal difference were achieved in the final score. 28) HABLANDO DE LOS MUNDIALES DE FÚTBOL ¿QUÉ OPINAN LOS JUGADORES? Y DEL MUNDIAL DE 1982 QUE SE CELEBRÓ EN ESPAÑA, ALGUNA VALORACIÓN DESDE SU PROFESIÓN. / 28) SPEAKING ABOUT THE WORLD CUP, WHAT DO THE PLAYERS THINK AND IS THERE ANY ASSESSMENT FROM YOUR PROFESSION ABOUT THE WORLD CUP WHICH WAS HELD IN SPAIN IN 1982?

28) Speaking about the World Cup, what do the players think and is there any assessment from your profession about the World Cup which was held in Spain in 1982?

A World Cup is qualified, according to FIFA, "Plenary Assembly of Humanity" because no other sport is able to offer a mass event with such great resonance in media.

There are some comments of famous players where they award the great football events as unforgettable, as the poet Antonio Machado: would say “People will never forget what shines and the thunders”. It is talked about Pelé: "When the farmers without lands grabbed cities, they respected the stadiums, in this way they demonstrated their love for football." And it is put into the mouth of the great Alfredo Di Stéfano: "football and dance have many things in common: the ability, balance and imagination, the Football has something artistic which requires a poetic soul. "

It has been more than 25 years since the World Cup was held in Spain. Spanish players and technicians who participated in the event have evaluated this ephemeris 25 years later. I rescue some comments from the players by its importance and transcendence to consider in coming championships.

José Emilio Santamaría the Spanish coach in the world cup in 1982, was "marked" by the result which the selection obtained there, to the point that since then, as a coach, he has not trained a first class team anymore, according what he said to  media " if  we do not win I will leave and it was what happened. But I was wrong. Then I had offers but due to my disgust I turned them down and I ended up moving away from football although was my environment "And even more:" In the hotel there were a hundred security guards, a lot of pressure and a vacuum around me which I did not understand It was like the final judgment. Previously I had done a good job in the lower grades where there is illusion to become a star, to wear the colours of your team and to have less worry about money”.

We wonder what you think of these statements, talking about the loneliness he felt at the hotel and the decision he took of leaving football after the result which the selection obtained in the world cup.

We can think and today we can ensure that with the presence of the mental health specialists (psychoanalysts) in the concentration of the Spanish selection, the effects would have been different. These are beneficial effects which can be transmitted to the players (moderation, tolerance, tranquillity, listening, understanding, friendship, commitment ...) with the consequences that directly are expressed in the emotions and feelings of the highly demanded professional in the competition.

The facts exist after being interpreted, it means that what we say now can serve for upcoming events since a champion is built and the errors in the process are part of learning.

López Ufarte, the brave player who participated with the selection said: “the pressure overcame us, we have played well in the previous preparation games and we were as favourites."

Rafael Gordillo, Spanish defender said: “we lost a lot of preparation time in the mountains, I remember it was freezing. Physically we did not have the right level. I was marked for the sadness of an entire country. "

Sadness, loneliness, pressure, vacuum, illusions and we can list other affects are "details" which play with particular efficacy in the final result, either during the preparation phase or during the development of the whole championship. (To be continued…)

27) DE LA JERGA FUTBOLÍSTICA ¿ALGUNA ANÉCDOTA?/ 27) ABOUT THE FOOTBALL JARGON, IS THERE ANY ANECDOTE?

27) About the football jargon, is there any anecdote?

Over time the vocabulary of football has gained a parallel transformation into the daily life, to the point that many words have been accepted by the Royal Spanish Academy of Language, and others will be included soon.

In the first decades of the twentieth century, people wrote about this sport, celebrities such as Miguel de Unamuno, Pedro Muñoz Seca, Carlos Mariano de Cavia Arniches and others. The last one was urged publicly to find a meaning in Castilian of "foot-ball" and he decided to name it "balompie", a term that became popular at first, until it finally was unanimously adopted into football (futbol).

According to studies by Ramón Sánchez, , in the nineteenth century when the British introduced football in our country through the mines of Riotinto in Huelva, he also brought with the football some British expressions  and words of this sport which were introduced in our Spanish language and along the twentieth century some were transformed by its translation words such as: goal (goal), referee (referee), offside (offside or orsay), and others have persisted as penalty (penalty) corner.

Imprinting is another sport language, the importance of writing in the transmission of information and the popularity which some journalists got in broadcasting some football events.Recall that one of the drivers of the FA in England was a sports journalist and before the television appeared ,the radio broadcasts left a trail of great plasticity in phrases like "to kiss meshes" (when the ball went into the goal), "maximum punishment" or "fateful point" (referring to the penalty), "to hit the crossbar" (when the ball hit the crossbar), "respectable" (referring to the public), " to make a hat" (lifting the ball over the rival head and controlling it in his back), "to steal the wallet" (equivalent to occupy a privileged position to the top with respect to defence), "making a  wall" (combination of two fellow beating an opponent), " to put a cassock to some one "(passing the ball between the legs of the opponent and regain control of the ball)

Football jargon is only possible by poetic art, where the metaphor and the metonymy condense and displace creating images in the universal language of ball which is played in all languages by its structural existence. (To be continued…)
